This little guy has been a real pleasure to draw so far and this is my first time using Pan Pastels for the base colour of the squirrel, which I’ve found to be really helpful.
Just getting that initial layer down only took around 30 minutes, and now I can see exactly where the shadows are for me to work over with my coloured pencils.
This particular piece is on Pastel Mat paper from Clairfontaine, the background isn’t Pan Pastels but actually done using my Caran D’Ache Pablo pencils, which I find beautifully soft like butter for something like this.
As you can see from this progress picture, I’ve sketched in a rough idea of the tail and I have started to work around the head area with my pencils. Another few hours and I will be able to publish the finished piece (hopefully)!
